Bentley unveil the new Continental GT V8 in Detroit

Bentley unveiled the new Continental GT V8 at the Detroit Auto Show with Derek driving the car onto the Bentley stand for the reveal in front of the attendant press alongside Bentley Motors Chairman and Chief Executive, Wolfgang Duerheimer.

The new Continental GT V8 boasts a new compact 4.0 litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine delivering 500 bhp and 487 lb-ft of torque mated to a new new eight-speed automatic transmission, offering greater efficiency and extending the cars range to 500 miles.

Much of that efficiency comes from the fact that the 4.0 litre V8 makes use of cylinder deactivation when the driver maintains speed or decelerates. The engine automatically drops to four-cylinder power in those situations, though the remaining cylinders pick up the instant the driver tips into the throttle.

Performance figures are very impressive, the Continental GT V8 can accelerate to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds on its way to a top speed of 188 mph thanks in part to the new automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system.  Derek was just as impressed with the handling as he was with the performance, which he described as like “turning on a penny.”

Bentley will offer both the Continental GT V8 and the Continental GTC V8 alongside the standard Continental GT models, powered by the W12 engine.
